How many door panels should I have?

The number of doors you should have largely depends on your window size as well as your preference. Small windows require only one or two doors, whereas larger windows may look better with three or more.

Consider whether you want your shutters to fold out with a big reveal, or whether you want them to tuck back neatly.

How do I choose a louvre size?

Your louvre size depends on two things, the amount of light you want to let in and the style you are aiming for.

Smaller louvres have a very classic, rustic look. But let in a little less light, due to the number of louvres.

Bigger louvres offer a modern, bright and bold alternative. With fewer louvres needed, they have a distinctive look that complements contemporary styles.

What is a tiltrod?

The tiltrod is the part of the shutter that allows you to open and close the louvres and control the flow of light. There are two types of tiltrods - visible and hidden. Visible tiltrods can be used to open and close your shutter, hidden tiltrods require you to grip the louvres to open and close them.

The two types of tiltrod function in much the same way and the choice is largely cosmetic. Visible tiltrods are more common in rustic, traditional decors, while hidden tiltrods tend to be used with modern, contemporary designs.

Recess Type

Shutters can either sit inside the recess - allowing you space on your windowsill - or outside of it, against the wall. Both styles offer a unique look, all you need to do is choose the one you prefer.

Which frame should I choose?

The type of frame you choose is a largely cosmetic choice. Consider how you wish for your shutter to look when making your decision, but also think about how much light your want to let into your room. A larger frame will block out a little more light.

What frame type should I choose?

There are two types of frames you can choose from. For most shutters, you will likely want to choose L frames. These can be used either inside or on the very outside of your window recess.

However, if you want a shutter that fits inside the recess with a lip around the edge of the window, then Z frames are perfect for you. Be wary if you have protruding windowsills, as you will need to select a top, left and right frame without a bottom.

What hinge should I choose?

If you are looking for a subtle finish, then choose a hinge colour that matches your shutter. However, if you want to be a bit bolder you can use a contrasting colour as an accent colour.
