Plantation Shutters

Plantation window shutters are so named because of their similarity to the external wooden window shutters that were found on American Plantations, to prevent the heat from filtering into the internal rooms of the house.

Now used predominantly inside the home, wooden plantation shutters add an elegant, classic look to a room's décor, offering privacy, ventilation and lighting versatility.

Colonial Shutters

Plantation shutters are often referred to as wooden colonial shutters, but strictly speaking, Colonial Shutters refer to external window wooden shutters, whereas plantation shutters are now considered to be internal wooden shutters.

Tier on Tier Concertina Shutters

Although very rare, there are occasions where several shutters are required to fill a window space in both height and width, on these occasions, the choice would be tier on tier concertina shutters. This style of shutter can be awkward to fit and is only used where no other alternative can be found.

Materials used in Plantation Shutters

There are two types of plantation shutters you can get - MDF shutters and wood shutters. The majority of plantation shutters are made from wood, with a large proportion of the market being for wooden shutters, painted to a colour to suit the décor of the room; white plantation shutters being the most popular in the marketplace.

There are alternatives to solid wood shutters, with the most popular being painted MDF or coated MDF shutters. These MDF shutters tend to be less expensive than solid wood plantation shutters, but when you consider the costs of curtains and curtain poles these days, the MDF shutters option becomes very cost effective. Here at Shutters Direct we can offer these MDF shutters.
