Fitting Wooden Shutters

Are you planning to install your own wooden plantation shutters?

Wooden plantation shutters can make any room in your home look great but before buying and installing your new wooden shutters you should follow these steps that will guide you through the plantation shutter installation:

1. Make accurate measurements of the window or windows on which you are planning to fit your wooden shutters. You should measure across the top, bottom and middle of window. Once you have these three measurements, select the largest one. You must then measure from the top molding of the window to the top of the windowsill.

2. Before installing your wooden shutters, decide whether you want to use an inside mount (this will attach the shutters inside the window casing) or an outside mount (attaching the shutters outside the window casing).

3. Add a wood shim on top of the windowsill to support the shutter during installation and ensure the proper placement of your shutters.

4. Hold your shutters in your desired position and use a screw to mark holes.

5. With your wooden shutters set aside and while wearing safety glasses, drill a pilot hole using a drill bit which is slightly smaller than the size of screw you are using to fit the shutters.

6. Re-position your shutters and use a drill to screw the shutters securely in place.

7. After installing your first set of shutters, step back and look carefully to make sure everything they are fitting evenly and that everything is plumb (many windows are not plumb, which could leave shutters badly positioned).

8. After all screws are secured, add screw covers. When adding these it is advisable to use a towel to protect the screw cover and surrounding area while tapping the cover lightly into place with a hammer.

9. Add any decorative knobs which have been supplied with your shutters.

10. Stand back and admire your new wooden shutters.
